  WHAT HAPPENED?

  When Spain won the 2023 Women's World Cup in Australia, defeating England 1-0 in the final, the focus should have been on the players who were crowned world champions. However, Rubiales, then the president of the Spanish federation, kissed Hermoso in the post-match celebrations and was later banned by FIFA. Hermoso has since testified in court that the kiss was not consensual and, according to the , Rubiales is set to stand trial on charges of sexual assault and coercion.

  THE BIGGER PICTURE

  That was not the first controversy that surrounded the Spanish federation. A year before the World Cup began, 15 national team players ('Las 15') made themselves unavailable for selection "until situations that affect our emotional and personal state, our performance and, consequently, the results of the selection and that could lead to undesirable injuries are reversed". In light of that, details of controlling behaviour from head coach Vilda emerged in the Spanish press, though he would not leave his post until after the World Cup triumph.

  Now, a number of Spain stars are set to feature in a Netflix documentary which tells the story of that dramatic year, from 'Las 15' to winning the World Cup. It is titled '#SeAcabo: Diario de las campeonas', which translates to '#It'sOver: A Champion's Diary'.

  On X, Netflix's Spain shared images of Hermoso, Putellas, Bonmati and Irene Paredes when announcing the documentary. The post read: "The kiss was just the straw that broke the camel's back. The journey from Las 15's letter to the World Cup, told first-hand by some of the champions."
